Herb garden using a 16th century theme any ideas?

Question by tychi: Herb garden using a 16th century theme any ideas?
I would like to keep it simple and use rocks, a low
maintenance style. Any resources and books that
can show me would be of great help.
I saw one in the june issue of Canadian Living.
The Checkerboard style looked very neat and I’d like
one in by small section of my back yard.

There is a Shakespeare garden in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. You could probably find pictures of it online. Otherwise, lots of Thymus, Rosemarinus, Lavendula, and Salvia would be a good start.
