How do I plant an herb garden? ?

Question by Shelley: How do I plant an herb garden? ?
How do I plant an herb garden? I want to have things like Parsley, cilantro, etc. Can I plant one directly on the ground or does it do better in one of those long pots for planting? And would now be a good time (Im in Florida so doesn’t really get too cold here) Also, if anyone knows any good sites for tips on gardening I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

Like you said, what you can plant depends on your location. I believe that the herbs you mentioned will grow there as well. Form the conditions in Florida, there is a good chance they will do well in the ground. I would make sure they are shaded on days when it gets scorching hot. There are many garden resources available.

* www.davesgarden.com – This is a paid website, But there os a very usefal datbase that is free. You just have to register. There are thousands of plant listings and sources.

* www.gardenweb.com – A garden forum.

I hope this is of help to you.

    The best thing to do before you start is to decide exactly what you want to plant.
    Some herbs are very large, some spread if not controlled and some are well behaved. You need to know which are which, as the strong growers with smother the well behaved. Herbs also like different growing conditions so not all will do well in sun and the same for shade.

    Next the size and shape you want. Everything has to be easily accessible as you are going to harvest throughout the year.

    Something like this is very simple and not expensive but does require a large space.
    Easier for a small space is to work on a wheel.

    It doesn’t have to be above ground or as expensive as this readymadeone. You can adapt with bricks or wood but if you are on heavy clay soil I would make it raised.

    That brings me on to soil. Mediteranean herbs do not like being wet so soil must be free draining for those. (thyme, lavender, oregano etc.)Leafy annuals like cilantro prefer more moisture and a little shade. so use different soil for them and position out of the hottest part of the day

    Finally the thugs. If you choose to grow lemon balm or any mint plant it in a pot and sink the pot. Never plant mint directly in the ground. You will regret it as the roots spreads like spaghetti under the ground and it will take over your garden. Lemon balm isn’t quite so bad as it is a little easier to remove but will also spread as far as you let it.

    I hope that has been of some help but there is a lot more to tell. I would get a book specifically on herb gardens. They are fascinating plants so worth growing and knowing about.
