How to Grow Basil

I’m going to show you how to grow what is, quite possibly, the world’s most popular herb: Basil. Basil is a key ingredient in the cuisines of many Southeast Asian countries and of course Italy. Its popularity is due to the range of flavors, sizes and colors available, and because it is so easy to grow in the ground or in containers. All you need to do is provide rich soil and plenty of sunshine and water!

Very informative clip. Thanks for the upload.? I have a question. I am from Malta and our summer is very very hot and humid. The temperature reaches 38 C / 100 F and even more. Shall I still grow the basil under direct sunlight for six hours?

UGHH! The soil in my back yard sucks!!! I have 2 pecan trees that are at least 60? years old and they practically drain the soil from any nutrients. I literately have sand for top soil. I don’t have a compost so does anyone know any cheep brands of quality potting soil for small vegetables and herbs and spices?

Thanks! Really helpful information! I love using basil in most anything even fresh salads, and I love the way? it smells so I like to grow some where I can smell it often like by my kitchen sink but I have yet to keep a good healthy plant alive for long. Will try your tips and see how it goes.

  20. lennyf1957 says:

the plants I grew from the harvested seeds produced virtually no “seed tops”. Maybe 1 or 2 out of the dozen or so plants. The plants I buy from the home center make tons of seeds and? I continuously pinch off the tops.
    thanks for the reply

  21. Jagonomic says:

I think i have the answer. Whenever basil plants grow they flourish, one important step is pinch the flowers, so? that the growing continues and the FLAVOR doesn’t change. The flourishing changes the flavor in a wrong way.

  22. Jagonomic says:

@Lunarlaserranging I believe fertilizer on? eatable herbs is questionable, i would like to know though how to prevent flyes from messing up my basil.

  23. lennyf1957 says:

I really enjoy watching all your videos.
I grew about 20 basil plants from seeds I saved & dried from a previous batch of basil that I bought in a home center. The basil form the home center was marginally successful. The plants from the seeds however looked fantastic. They grew very full, healthy looking but when I made pesto with them, it was awful.
Any idea what may have caused them to taste so? bad?
thanks and keep the great videos coming.
