No plant food at all, herbs grow in the Mediterranean in poor quality, free draining soils, the herbs will get very leggy in fed conditions. So well drained compost and any water will do,do not overwater. These rules do not apply to basil, and parsley, which like wetter, cooler conditions

First lets talk about light needs for herbs. When growing plants inside adequate lighting is absolutely necessary. Most herbal plants will require at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. Artificial lighting can be used if you have the correct bulbs. Second on the list is potting soil. Choose a lite sterile potting mix found locally at any garden center that is within your budget. Do not use soil from your garden unless you sterilize it (bake it, a little stinky but it works). Third on the list is your water needs. Rain water is the best if you can collect it which will also help you out on the budget end. Fourth is the type of plant food. Perfect Balance or Garden Plenty are excellent choices for plant food. Hope this information helps.
