I want to plant an indoor window sill herb garden, any advice?? I’m a beginner….?

Question by : I want to plant an indoor window sill herb garden, any advice?? I’m a beginner….?
I have very little experience gardening but I am tired of crappy supermarket herbs so I want to grow my own. I want to be able to have fresh herbs year round so I would like to grow inside. My kitchen window gets full sun almost all day. I need advice on where to start and what type of herbs grow best/easiest indoors.

Read the Herb gardener/a guide for all seasons by Susan McClure. Great for inside and out.

You are quite right about supermarket dry herbs, the lack flavor after a while, often long before they are actually bought. They are also quite expensive and often disappointing.

Growing your own herbs is quite simple and you won’t believe the flavor boost fresh leaves will add to your meals. There are good alternative ways to do so inside and all year long without taking too much room.

Basically you can grow a ”mini”" garden on the kitchen windowsill, preferably facing south or southwest in little containers. You don’t need to grow a lot of the same plant for they produce very well. Herbs need 3 things : Good draining soil, water, and sunlight.

There is a good free site that explains this more in details that you might want to have a look at. The links are underneath.

    Happy gardening.

I’d suggest getting one of those little kits and start with that. They are made to fit on all window sills.

They come complete with seeds, pots, and great step-by-step directions.

When you have good results, go bigger.
