by some mulch and dig and turn some soil while adding much then plant some plants.

Start with a Farmers Almanac. Learn about seasons and planting and stuff before you waste abunch of time.
Ask at a local nursery, ir somesuch thing.
After you have exhausted all of those resources then go to a retirement place and ask if you can ask any of the old people in there about gardening.
Most eve4ry 65+ year old remembers Victory Gardens and other stuff that thier parents taught them. You get a free course in proper farming techniques and the people get to share the wisdom with one that will use it, win/win.

First think about which herbs you want to cultivate.

Then look in as many seed catalogues as you can find.

You can raise herbs with seed or buy individual plants. For a beginner, I suggest you buy plants.

Do you make salads and sauces? Try cilantro or parsely.

Mint can be dried or used fresh in iced or hot tea.

Many other herbs are useful. Just decide which you want to raise and buy plants or seed. Grow them in a window if you like but they will grow better outside.
