Question by Lizzie Schoon: Will the small red centipedes in my soil kill my herb garden?
I had an indoor herb garden that lived about three weeks. Then, without changing my watering schedule, still getting the same amount of sunshine, everything started getting brown spots on the leaves and dried to a crisp. I just started removing the soil from the planter and there are lots of tiny, red centipedes running around in there. Could they have caused the herb disaster? (I had mint, basil, and thyme)

Best answer:

Answer by TCM
From what I’ve heard from gardeners over the years, centipedes are good for the garden. They apparently eat insects that harm the plants. Maybe you had an infestation of bugs and the centipedes were helping, but not enough. Or you may have had a fungus growing on them.

Question by Cierra: What soil should I use for an herb garden?
I am going to grow an herb garden, and I’m not sure what kind of soil I use. I am going to be planting rosemary, thyme, cilantro, sage, dill, and parsley. I don’t know if what I am planting makes a difference on what soil I should either. Also I was thinking about planting some flowers in the same area, and I’m not sure if this will affect the herb garden.

Best answer:

Answer by gardensallday
I just plant these things in my regular soil. I’m in the midwest, though, and the soil here is good even if you do nothing to it. I would suggest going to your local garden center and asking. Most herbs are very tough. Flowers should not affect them. It is very uncommon for plants to harm each other and tends to be desert plants, I think (a few plants poison the soil for other plants. Walnut trees do this also)

Full sun is important.

I’ve never done this before, but I’m not a stranger to gardening. I’ve done some landscaping in my life and have raised herbs for cooking.

I want a small vegetable garden in my backyard. How large of a bed should I need and should I put it in a full-sun spot or a shadier area?

Keeping in mind that this is a small garden, what would be the best way to dig it? I’m not afraid to do some manual labor — in fact, I like it. What tools will I need to till the ground? There’s only grass there and the soil may be clayey.

I’d like to grow some herbs like rosemary, mint and basil. I’d also like to have strawberries, tomatoes, garlic and a few other easy crops. What others would be good for beginners?

Also, if there are any decorative flowers or plants that would make the garden look nice as well as functional, let me know.

I live in USDA hardiness zone 6b, meaning the average temperature 0 to -5 degrees F.
