Tamron 28-75/2.8 maybe… but at the end of the day everyone shoots differently. i personally use a AF Nikkor 35-70mm lens when i take fashion shots, but other people may disagree with me.

The 24-85 is popular, if you are a Nikon shooter. It gives a nice zoom range. It’s a variable aperture, but it’s not all that restrictive, especially when you consider the price is lower because of this design.

    ADD’L

The 24-70 is the obvious choice, but it’s twice the size and 3 times the price of the 24-85. If that doesn’t bother you, go for it. I sort of assumed that, if you are asking here, you’d know about that lens already and you wouldn’t need to ask this question in the first place.

You definitely don’t want to get “close up” to take portraits. They’ll look awful. Getting some distance between you and the subject is what you should be aiming for.

Ultimately it depends on what size sensor your camera has.

For an APS-C sized sensor something like a 50mm would be ideal. Forget zoom lenses – just zoom with your feet instead!!! What you want is a prime lens.

For a full frame camera you’d want something around 75mm

    Nikon 24-70 supplemented by a 50 and 85mm both f1.4 of course.

  4. deep blue2 says:

    For fashion/glamour work, I use any of the following;

    50mm f1.8
    85mm f1.8
    24-70mm f2.8

i gave all above me a thumbs up……

anyway, on antm they use mostly hassleblad cameras with i would geuss 100mm or so lens, the right lens depends on the camera body you use and the distance to subject.

  6. Forlorn Hope says:

you will find that the photographers on any of those shows will have VERY EXPENSIVE cameras with very expensive professional lenses…

those cameras are out of the budget of most amateur photographers… and even out of the ability of most photographers to use…

you probably need to look at firstly developing your skills to know what you are doing with a camera, how to use the light, composition and angle…

without the basic knowledge of photography, you aren’t going to be able to take decent photos even with the right equipment…

but theoretically, ANY lens can be used as a portrait lens… it all depends on the circumstances…

  7. mister-damus says:

There is no “best”. it depends.

The ‘classic’ (though by no means the only) portrait lens was 85mm. Nowadays, some people use 50mm lenses, or they use zoom lens (such as 28-90mm). A full frame sensor will give a different effect with a lens than a cropped frame sensor will.

  8. Bob K says:

Every lens for whatever camera system you own is “the best lens” in fashion photography.

Honest. It is up to the fertile mind of the professional photographer who has his/her eye poked into the viewfinder to make the picture that will catch the eyes of the masses and sell, sell, sell…
