Question by alex: What makes pictures in magazines look high fashion?? Is it the camera (expensive) or editing?
I want to get into photography but arent sure if its better to save up and get a more expensive camera, or buy a good one, like a 1000 dollar one maybe, and start from there?
is the editing a big part of what makes the picture look amazing? or does it just pop out of the camera like that?

I suggest you go into film photography first. People who usually shot with DSLR camera’s have only been doing that. I suggest film to learn about photography first instead of buying an expensive camera. Get the Canon Rebel Film Camera’s. Learn the basics and see if you are really devoted to buying a nice camera with this. You may not want to stick with it and you will make a very big mistake spending your money on one.

Lighting and props mostly.
For full page ads I expect a medium format digital camera such as the Hasselblad H3D is commonly used.
$ 1000 wont buy you much for professional photography. maybe $ 15000 min. ( and no, pictures like that dont just pop out of the camera that way). it is the equipment that matters a lot, though you can practice with a cheap (but still $ 500-$ 1000) digital slr (Single Lens Reflex). and you will need good editing software (like photoshop cs2 or better) and a computer with A LOT of RAM to run these programs. but yes start small with a good DSLR ( and keep in mind a more exspensive camera does not neccesarily mean better, so make sure you know as much about them as possible to get one that will work for you)
I think both because when you are good in editing but poor in camera resolution or what the picture won’t be that good so for me if the two are present in a picture it would look better.
but if i could only pick 1 it have to be editing because its one of the important parts in picture in magazines because every picture must be careful check and to make neccessary corrections and put some things that can make it more attractive and beautiful.

The camera is only one of many tools used.
There’s also lighting, styling, make up, directing, editing/ CG, casting/ model, carpenters, props…
Of course, they may not be used all at once. At this stage, the camera (even though it may cost $ 50,000), is as important as a power drill on the set. It’s just another tool in the arsenal, but that tool alone does not define the image.
You need a great camera (at least $ 10,000), but you also have to have a great artistic eye, great knowledge of lighting, great rapport with the subject you photograph and especially phenomenal editing in photoshop cs4.
What makes a high-fashion image:
1. A strong concept or fashion piece
2. An appropriate and talented model
3. Superb makeup and hair
4. Excellent locations/set design
5. An encyclopedic understanding of lighting, either natural or artificial
6. An eye for composition
7. A technical understanding of the operation of the camera
8. A retouching/editing ability appropriate to the nature of the shot
Neither photoshop nor an expensive camera alone can make an image look amazing, nor are either requisite to the manufacture of a striking fashion image.
it’s a combination of camera, lenses, editing, lighting, props, technique, your artistic eye, and being able to direct your models into the proper poses and evoking the proper emotion to fit the result you’re looking for.
don’t listen to some of these people. yes, it’s true. photography is an expensive thing to get into. but you don’t need a $ 10,000 camera to take amazing pictures. you also don’t need thousands of dollars worth of lighting equipment. there are many ways to beat around the bush and get very wonderful results. i use a canon digital rebel xsi, and i’m quite happy with the images i get from it. learn how to use photoshop. it will become your best friend
Also, look into HDR photography. A lot of photographers shoot ads in magazines in this way. you can do a search and there are many tutorials that will teach you about it.
