Women and Real Men Wear Purple Scarfs Around Urfa, Southeastern Turkey

www.TravelsWithSheila.com As the Explore group drove closer to Urfa, both women and MEN in the cotton fields of Turkey were wearing light, filmy purple scarfs glitzed up with applique and sequins. It seems that each year, the Kurds “adopt” a new color (last year was green) and that color then becomes THE fashion. That became even more obvious in Urfa (Sanliurfa) walking by the sacred pond. Vendors everywhere selling purple. Inside the Old Urfa bazaar, stacks of purple scarfs. In the park – more purple. And what was even more impressive to “wimpy men” in our group, the Kurdish men thought nothing of wearing a sequined, purple scarf with flair and panache. Purple doesn’t diminish their masculinity!! Do they care if they look like “Barney”? No way…. Bravo, Kurdish men.
